Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged lawmakers to uphold accountability, discipline, and competence as the Senate resumed plenary today after a 10-week recess.

Delivering his opening address, Akpabio reminded his colleagues of their core responsibility to serve the Nigerian people with integrity and focus, according to reports

“To the citizens of Nigeria, we hear you. You asked us not for excuses, but for results. We will remain accountable and responsive,” he stated.

Akpabio warned against any attempt to undermine the legislative arm of government, describing such actions as a direct threat to the democratic structure.

“Those who seek to weaken the legislature seek to delete the structure of democracy itself,” he declared.

Calling for a shift away from performative politics, the Senate President described governance as a “sacred duty of trust, not theatrics.” He also urged lawmakers to prioritise competence over noise and popularity in political appointments and decision-making.

“If our politics must remain, let us choose the right men for the service of our nation — not the loudest voices or those who seek office as an ornament, but those worthy of the people’s trust,” he said
