Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, has apologised following his mid-air altercation with social media critic VeryDarkMan on a United Nigeria Airlines flight on Monday.

In a video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, Mr Jollof explained his side of the incident, saying he acted in self-defence and did not intend to disrupt the flight or inconvenience passengers.

“I want to use this medium to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and the passengers,” he said. “I was only defending myself. You guys saw what happened. I am very sorry if I delayed your appointment. I’m very sorry. Pardon me. I am not that kind of person; it will never happen again.”

He also addressed his family directly, adding, “To my lovely wife, I know you are proud of me. And to my kids, I’m sorry; Daddy will never do this again.”

The confrontation, which was captured on video by fellow passengers, has drawn the attention of aviation authorities. Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), issued a public call for more information to aid an investigation.

“If you are kind enough to provide the name of the airline in whose aircraft this incident occurred and the date, it would help investigations,” Achimugu wrote on X.

According to the NCAA, physical fights on flights are considered serious safety breaches. If the two men are found to have violated aviation regulations, they could face sanctions ranging from fines to temporary or permanent flight bans. Aviation authorities have also indicated that criminal prosecution is possible.

The clash is the latest in a series of public confrontations involving both men, but regulators insist that behaviour onboard an aircraft carries much higher consequences due to the risks posed to passenger safety.
