The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling ₦189 billion.

A source within the commission, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to Channels Television on Monday, alleging that the transactions violated provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

It remains unclear when the withdrawals were made. However, Tambuwal reportedly arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 11:30 a.m., where he was interrogated by investigators over the alleged financial misconduct.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment on the case.

Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015, governed Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023.
