The Federal Government has approved over ₦1.04 trillion for key road construction and rehabilitation projects across the country, according to the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
In a statement issued to journalists over the weekend, Umahi revealed that the approval followed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on November 6, 2025.
According to him, the projects include:
- The 163 km Sokoto–Badagry Coastal Superhighway Section 3 (Badagry–Ogun-Oyo border) is worth ₦553 billion (₦3.39 billion per km, full concrete).
- Ota–Idiroko Section I at ₦98 billion and a flyover at ₦23 billion.
- Ijebu Igbo–Etapa–Owoyen Road (37 km) at ₦53 billion.
- Lagos–Ibadan Motorway Phase II Section II (underpasses, ramps, and side roads) at ₦43.73 billion.
- Ilorin–Omu Aran–Egba Road Phase I (31 km) at ₦43 billion.
Other approved projects include Wasasa–Turunku–Mararaba Phase II (42 km, Kaduna) at ₦30.23 billion; Enugu–Onitsha Road Phase I (35 km) at ₦28.47 billion; Mushin–NNPC–Apapa–Oshodi Dualisation (14.4 km) at ₦19.09 billion; and the East–West Road (PH–Warri axis, with 3 flyovers and 2 bridges) at ₦156 billion.
Umahi attributed the increase in project costs to rising inflation, difficult terrains, and revised design standards, noting that the price of reinforcement steel has climbed to ₦1.1 million per tonne.
He also disclosed that the governors of Edo, Delta, and Abia States have taken responsibility for financing and executing certain federal roads in their respective states.
According to Umahi, this partnership aims to ease the federal government’s financial burden and ensure timely completion of road projects.
He stated, “The revised approvals reflect our commitment to durable, concrete-based infrastructure that can withstand decades of use while ensuring value for money.”
