Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja , formerly the University of Abuja, has appointed Professor Matthew Adamu as its Acting Vice-Chancellor for a three-month term, effective August 11, 2025.
According to a statement by the Acting Registrar, Roseline Adakayi, Adamu takes over from Professor Patricia Manko Lar, whose six-month acting tenure is coming to an end. The university praised Lar’s “purposeful leadership” and noted her role in initiating the process to appoint a substantive Vice-Chancellor.
Adamu, a Professor of Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology (Helminthology), brings 27 years of professional and academic experience. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and an MSc from the University of Maiduguri, and a PhD in Veterinary Surgery from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is also a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria.
His career has included roles in private veterinary practice, research at the Nigeria Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research, and academic appointments at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, where he rose to full professorship in 2019.
The statement said Adamu’s main task will be to support the Governing Council, chaired by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, in completing the appointment process for a substantive Vice-Chancellor in line with statutory provisions. The university community wished him a successful transition period.
