The Worst Is Over, Yesterday’s Pains Are Giving Way To Relief, Tinubu Tells Nigerians
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his 65th Independence Day address to the nation, delivered a message of tough reforms, economic resilience, and national security, outlining what his administration has achieved and what lies ahead for Nigeria.
The speech, his third since assuming office in May 2023, covered ground on growth indicators, infrastructure projects, youth support, and renewed commitment to national unity.
Below are 10 critical highlights from his address:
1. Economy Shows Strong Recovery Signs
Tinubu announced that GDP grew by 4.23% in Q2 2025, beating IMF projections and marking Nigeria’s best growth rate in four years.
2. Inflation Falls, Naira Stabilises
Inflation dropped to 20.12% in August 2025, while the Naira has begun to stabilise following FX reforms, removal of multiple exchange rates, and increased remittance flows.
3. Foreign Reserves and Revenue Up
Foreign reserves increased to $42.03 billion, while non-oil revenue crossed N20 trillion by August, reflecting improved fiscal health and diversification.
4. Oil Output and Refining Improve
Oil production reached 1.68 million barrels per day, and for the first time in four decades, Nigeria is refining petrol domestically. It is also now Africa’s top exporter of aviation fuel.
5. Trade and Tax Revenue Climb
Nigeria recorded a ₦7.46 trillion trade surplus in Q2, with a 173% rise in manufactured exports. The tax-to-GDP ratio rose to 13.5%, with a broader base expected in 2026.
6. Infrastructure Projects Accelerate
Major rail and road projects are underway, including the Kaduna-Kano rail, Kano-Maradi line, and Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. A $3 billion approval was secured to complete the Eastern Rail corridor.
7. Support to Vulnerable Households
Tinubu confirmed that N330 billion was disbursed to 8 million poor households, with each receiving up to N75,000 in three phases under the social investment programme.
8. Focus on Youth Empowerment and Education
Over 510,000 students have received loans under NELFUND, with N99.5 billion disbursed. Credicorp issued N30 billion in loans to 153,000 Nigerians. YouthCred is now active for NYSC members, and the iDICE programme is ready for rollout.
9. Security Sees Major Gains Nationwide
Tinubu stated that security forces have made “significant progress” in defeating Boko Haram in the North-East, IPOB/ESN in the South-East, and bandits in the North-West. As a result, peace has returned to hundreds of communities, and thousands of displaced people have safely returned home.
“We must continue to celebrate the gallantry of our armed forces,” he said, praising their sacrifice.
10. Call for Unity, Productivity, and Local Patronage
President Tinubu urged Nigerians to adopt a “Nigeria First” mindset, encouraging local production, tax compliance, and support for Made-in-Nigeria goods. He called on state governments to complement federal efforts in building a self-reliant nation.
While recognising the economic discomfort citizens are enduring, Tinubu said the country has turned the corner. “The worst is over,” he said. “With Almighty God on our side, the dawn of a new, prosperous Nigeria is here.”
