In a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, over 5,000 members of the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State.

The mass defection took place during a political rally at Aku town, in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, where prominent APC leaders welcomed the new members into the party.

Dignitaries at the event included the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji; the Enugu APC Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah; House of Representatives member for Udi-Ezeagu Federal Constituency, Sunday Umeha; and Director General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike Muonso.

Speaking at the rally, Chief Nnaji hailed the development as a sign of growing public appreciation for the projects being implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in Enugu State. However, he expressed concern over the economic conditions in the state under Governor Peter Mbah, blaming it on “misapplication of resources” and excessive taxation.

“Today in Enugu, we are facing a major economic quagmire. We are the second most expensive city in Nigeria, despite being a civil service town,” he said.
“A small girl selling sachet water pays between N300 and N500 daily. That’s over N100,000 a year. If properly utilised, this revenue could provide free education, healthcare, and improved infrastructure.”

Chief Nnaji commended former House of Assembly candidate Celestine Attah for spearheading the mass defection of members from LP, PDP, and APGA and pledged that the APC would deliver jobs, youth empowerment, and more federal infrastructure to the state.

He declared that the APC in Enugu had been repositioned to challenge for power in 2027.

“The APC in Enugu is no longer a mercantile party used for trading with the PDP. All the moles who were sabotaging the party have been shown the way out,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, Chief Agballah thanked President Tinubu for federal projects in the state, particularly the ongoing dualisation of the Ninth Mile–Opi–Makurdi road.

He criticised previous state governments for neglecting infrastructure in Igbo-Etiti, which he said remained inaccessible for over two decades.

“For 26 years, the people of Igbo-Etiti supported the ruling party without results. It took Tinubu’s APC government to bring real development,” he said.

The rally marked a major boost for the APC’s campaign to expand its base in the South-East region ahead of the next election cycle.
