The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja for the continuation of his treason trial, now presided over by Justice James Omotosho.

The hearing also saw a change in Kanu’s defence team, with Kanu Agabi (SAN) now leading the defence, while the prosecution continues to be headed by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

Shortly after the court proceedings began, Chief Agabi apologised on behalf of Kanu, acknowledging past outbursts directed at Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecution team, and his lawyers. He explained that Kanu had been angry for a long time but regretted his previous actions.

“Kanu is a good man, but we must understand that not everyone thinks alike. Mistakes happen, and we must focus on saving, not destroying,” Agabi stated.

The prosecution team accepted the apology, with Awomolo acknowledging the intense emotions surrounding the case and committing to ensuring an expedited hearing.

Justice Omotosho also reflected on the length of Kanu’s trial, noting that he was 47 years old when first arraigned in 2015 but is now 57, still uncertain about his fate. He suggested that the prolonged legal battle may have contributed to Kanu’s previous remarks.

To maintain fairness, Justice Omotosho offered an apology on behalf of Kanu to the prosecution as proceedings continued.
