The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Argungu, has cautioned police officers deployed for Saturday’s Anambra State governorship election to maintain professionalism and avoid any form of misconduct.
Argungu said the PSC had dispatched its monitoring teams to the three senatorial districts of Anambra to observe police conduct during the election.
He urged police personnel on election duty to demonstrate impartiality, discipline, and commitment to protecting both electoral officers and election materials.
“The police must ensure that a conducive environment is created for the people of Anambra State to exercise their franchise freely. Officers who compromise their duties or violate their code of conduct will face sanctions,” Argungu warned.
The PSC chairman said the Anambra election would serve as a test case for the police as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
He also expressed satisfaction with the preparations made by the Anambra State Police Command under Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu, noting that the commissioner had toured all area commands and identified flashpoints to ensure adequate security coverage.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the PSC Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, Argungu assured that the commission would reward officers who demonstrate professionalism and integrity during the election.
“The Commission staff monitors will operate from the state capital and the three senatorial districts of the state,” the statement added.
