In a surprise political development, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing health reasons. The former Kano State governor’s resignation is effective immediately.
Ganduje, who assumed the APC national chairmanship in August 2023, in his resignation letter attributes his decision to health concerns.
Sources familiar with the matter allege that Ganduje faced increasing resistance over “excessive financial demands” from party stakeholders, in addition to a string of allegations related to financial impropriety.
Although the APC is yet to release an official statement on the matter, his exit marks a notable shift in the party’s national leadership.
His tenure was not without controversy. In April 2024, a Kano State High Court issued an ex parte order restraining Ganduje from parading himself as a party member, following a suit filed by a faction of the APC leadership in his home state.
Around the same period, the APC North Central Forum also filed a suit seeking his removal — a case that was ultimately struck out by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Ganduje served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023 before stepping into the national political arena as APC chairman during a period of growing factionalism within the party.
As the APC navigates the aftermath of Ganduje’s sudden departure, party insiders and political analysts alike are closely monitoring who will succeed him and how the ruling party will manage the leadership vacuum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
