The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the just-concluded Lagos State local government elections, winning all 20 chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions.
The results were officially announced on Sunday by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), confirming APC’s continued dominance across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
In a rare break from the ruling party’s sweep, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won a single councillorship seat in Ward D of the Yaba LCDA. The candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, had defected from the APC to the PDP shortly before the poll.
Fifteen out of the 19 registered political parties participated in the elections, which were held across LGAs such as Alimosho, Surulere, Ikorodu, Badagry, Epe, and Eti-Osa, and LCDAs including Bariga, Ejigbo, Iba, Ojokoro, and Lekki, among others.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu cast his vote on Saturday, July 12, amid a turnout that LASIEC described as mixed across different areas. While some voters reported smooth processes, others noted delays and logistical challenges. LASIEC Chairperson, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), said materials eventually reached most destinations despite difficult terrain in some parts of the state.
She also noted that no political party was barred from participating in the election and assured that the commission had done its best to overcome challenges in reaching polling units, particularly in non-urban areas.
Although the election was largely peaceful, reports emerged of late arrival of electoral materials and isolated incidents of voter intimidation.
The APC’s clean sweep further consolidates its political hold on Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital and a key contributor to national revenue. The state also holds symbolic importance as the political base of President Bola Tinubu, who served as Lagos governor from 1999 to 2007.
