Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that he is unsure whether he will contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking in an upcoming interview on Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, Atiku, who has run for the presidency six times, emphasised that his decision would depend on the viability of the political platform available at the time.
His remarks come shortly after announcing a coalition of opposition leaders aimed at challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by President Bola Tinubu.
When asked about his 2027 plans, Atiku responded, “I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”
While he did not rule out the possibility of running, he stressed the urgent need for competent leadership in Nigeria. “I have not seen Nigeria in more dire need of experienced and credible leadership than now,” he added.
Atiku also recalled the successful opposition merger in 2014, which led to the APC’s victory, suggesting that a similar coalition could be key to unseating the ruling party in 2027.
His recent political moves have sparked speculation that he may throw his support behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi or former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in the next election.
