The Ayen community in Uhumwode Local Government Area of Edo State has called on the state government and security agencies to urgently intervene in what it described as worsening insecurity and unlawful arrests of its members.

In a statement issued on Thursday, community spokesperson Comrade Segun Babs said residents have endured persistent insecurity for over eight years, including killings and kidnappings, which have left many in fear.

He noted that although the community had previously reported threats to relevant authorities, the concerns were not adequately addressed. According to him, recent incidents suggest that armed groups may be attempting to seize land in the area.

While commending the state government for efforts that have reduced insecurity in some parts of Edo, the statement said Ayen continues to suffer renewed violence. It disclosed that five suspects were recently arrested in a security operation, three of whom were later released. However, the community alleged that some of the freed suspects returned and were repelled by military personnel.

The community further claimed that during follow-up operations, some of its leaders were detained and transferred to Abuja. It alleged that several members remain in custody and appealed for investigations to be conducted transparently and within the jurisdiction of the Edo State Police Command.

Expressing concerns over possible renewed attacks, the community urged the Edo State government and the Commissioner of Police to step in, ensure due process for detained members, and restore lasting peace to Ayen.
