BENUE KILLINGS: NYSC RELOCATES CORPS MEMBERS TO SAFER LOCATIONS

Written by on June 19, 2025

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has relocated corps members serving in crisis-prone areas of Benue State to safer locations following the recent wave of deadly attacks in the state.

State Coordinator of the NYSC in Benue, Mrs. Veronica Garba, disclosed this on Thursday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area.

Garba said the corps members serving in Yelewata and Daudu—two communities affected by attacks from suspected herders—were swiftly evacuated to Makurdi as soon as reports of the crisis reached the scheme.

“We do not joke with the safety of our corps members because we take them as our children,” she said. “As soon as we heard about the crisis, we contacted the Commissioner of Police, who deployed officers to help evacuate our corps members.”

She explained that the evacuated corps members were accommodated in designated “family houses,” including the facilities of the Nigeria Corpers Christian Fellowship (NCCF), National Association of Catholic Corps Members (NACC), and the Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN).

“We did a headcount and none was missing,” Garba added. “We have settled them temporarily in Makurdi until the situation improves.”

The coordinator reassured anxious parents of the corps members’ safety and urged them to remain calm, stressing that the situation was under close watch.

“With all the security chiefs now in Benue, the situation will surely improve. Above all, God—who is the safest security—is everywhere. He is with your children too,” she said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Makurdi on Wednesday, where he met with stakeholders and directed security agencies to restore peace and apprehend those responsible for the killings. The violence, which has gripped parts of Benue in recent weeks, has led to hundreds of deaths and thousands displaced.

Garba reiterated NYSC’s commitment to corps members’ safety and called for continuous prayers and support from the public.
