The Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, alongside his wife, Maria Alckmin, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday for the commencement of the second session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.
The high-level delegation was received at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole.
Also on hand to welcome the Brazilian officials were the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha; the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari; and other senior government officials.
The visit, regarded as a significant milestone in South-South diplomatic relations, is expected to foster new policy breakthroughs across multiple sectors of mutual interest.
Speaking at the airport, Senator Hadejia described the visit as “a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda” and highlighted the strategic value of strengthening bilateral ties with Brazil.
“This dialogue mechanism represents our commitment to leveraging South-South partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to our citizens,” Hadejia said. “Brazil’s expertise in agribusiness, energy transition, and industrial development aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s transformation priorities and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.”
The three-day summit is expected to culminate in the signing of over 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) spanning key areas such as defence cooperation, agricultural technology transfer, energy collaboration, and cultural exchange programmes.
Observers say the renewed partnership between Nigeria and Brazil could usher in expanded technical assistance, enhanced trade relations, and deeper multilateral collaboration within the Global South.
