Adebayo Adedamola on Tuesday clinched the Peoples Democratic Party governorship ticket for the 2026 Osun election, polling 919 of the 957 votes cast at the primary held in Osogbo.
Chairman of the primary committee, Humphrey Abba, who announced the results, said there were 20 void votes, adding, “One of the aspirants withdrew earlier. The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned.”
It was earlier reported that despite announcing his resignation from the party, Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name still appeared on the ballot.
Secretary of the primary committee, Sunday Solarin, confirmed that Adeleke and Adedamola were the two aspirants listed, but stressed that votes for Adeleke would “eventually amount to waste” following his departure from the party.
The exercise began at 11:07 a.m. after accreditation, with INEC representatives and the PDP national committee led by Abba present. Security was tight at the venue, with DSS operatives, police officers and NSCDC personnel stationed at strategic points.
Adeleke’s resignation letter dated November 4, 2025 and addressed to his Ward 2 Chairman, Sagba Abogunde surfaced this morning. In it, he cited the crisis within the PDP national leadership as his reason for quitting.
“I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” the governor wrote, thanking the party for the platform that produced him as senator and later governor.
His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the development.
The Osun PDP chairman, Sunday Bisi, had earlier said Adeleke may no longer seek the party’s 2026 ticket unless the crisis rattling the national leadership is resolved and validated by INEC.
According to INEC’s timetable for the August 8, 2026 Osun governorship election, political parties have until December 15 to submit the names of their candidates.
