Pope Robert Francis Prevost. Now to be known as Pope Leo XIV
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, becoming the first pontiff from the United States.
He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney just after 6:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, signalling the successful conclusion of the conclave. Tens of thousands of faithful in St Peter’s Square erupted in cheers as the announcement was made and the bells of St Peter’s Basilica rang out.
Moments later, the traditional papal tapestry was unfurled from the balcony of the basilica, where Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re proclaimed the Latin phrase “Habemus Papam” — “We have a pope.” Cardinal Prevost soon emerged, smiling and waving to the jubilant crowd.
“Peace be with you,” the new pope declared in his first words to the world.
Originally from Chicago, the election of Pope Leo XIV followed a brief conclave, lasting less than two days and reportedly concluding in just four rounds of voting—an indication of strong consensus among the 133 cardinal electors.
Observers had noted Prevost’s reputation as a bridge-builder, someone capable of uniting various ideological wings of the Church. His election appears to affirm that view, suggesting that the cardinals saw him as a moderate leader capable of advancing Pope Francis’s reformist legacy while healing internal rifts.
Pope Francis died last month at age 88 after a 12-year papacy marked by compassion, humility, and controversy. His progressive stance on several issues, including LGBTQ+ outreach, migration, and climate change, earned him global praise but also stirred resistance among traditionalists.

Pope Leo XIV takes office at a time of immense global and institutional challenges: increasing secularism in the West, ongoing sexual abuse scandals, a shortage of priests, and geopolitical instability. Within the Church, debates continue over women’s roles, celibacy, and doctrinal authority.
The newly elected pope is expected to celebrate his inaugural Mass within a week and deliver his first Urbi et Orbi blessing. He is also expected to take a symbolic ride around St Peter’s Square in the popemobile and outline his vision for the Church.
Speaking to reporters, Vatican insiders said Leo XIV will prioritise unity, justice, and pastoral care. His American roots and global outlook, they believe, could usher in a new chapter in the Church’s engagement with a rapidly changing world.
For the faithful gathered at the square, the atmosphere was electric. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said a Greek pilgrim. “Seeing history unfold before our eyes—there’s nothing like it.”
