President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has affirmed that his $20 billion refinery project is not in competition with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), but rather seeks collaboration to enhance Nigeria’s energy security.
Dangote made the statement during a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Mr. Bayo Ojulari, at the company’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday. The visit was aimed at strengthening partnership ties and promoting synergy between the two major energy players.
According to a statement issued by NNPC spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, Dangote emphasized that the two organisations are partners in progress.
“There is no competition between us; we are not here to compete with NNPC Ltd. NNPC is part and parcel of our business, and we are also part of NNPC. This is an era of cooperation between the two organisations,” Dangote said.
His remarks come amid past tensions over crude oil supply arrangements and speculation of rivalry, particularly around payment terms for crude in naira.
While pledging support for the new leadership of NNPC, Dangote expressed confidence in Ojulari’s capacity to lead the national oil firm, citing the quality of professionals within the corporation.
Ojulari, in his response, assured Dangote of a collaborative approach, anchored on healthy competition and strategic alignment. He highlighted the competence of NNPC’s workforce and reiterated the company’s commitment to national prosperity and energy security.
“NNPC is ready to collaborate wherever there is commercial advantage for Nigeria,” Ojulari said.
Both executives committed to maintaining direct engagement as relationship managers for their respective organisations, aiming to unlock opportunities that would benefit the Nigerian economy and its citizens.
