DANGOTE RETIRES AS CHAIRMAN OF DANGOTE SUGAR AFTER 20 YEARS

Aliko Dangote has announced his retirement as Chairman of the Board of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, bringing to a close two decades of leadership. His retirement will take effect on June 16, 2025, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday by the company’s secretary, Temitope Hassan.
Dangote, who assumed the role in 2005, is credited with transforming the company into Nigeria’s leading sugar producer. During his tenure, he championed significant expansion projects and strengthened corporate governance across the company’s operations. The statement noted that Dangote spearheaded key Backward Integration Projects in Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States as part of efforts to boost local sugar production and reduce the country’s reliance on imports.
“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025,” the statement read.
To ensure a smooth transition, the Board has appointed Independent Non-Executive Director Arnold Ekpe as the new chairman, effective the same day. Ekpe, a seasoned banker and former Group CEO of Ecobank, brings a wealth of experience in boardroom leadership and corporate strategy.
“Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe, Independent Non-Executive Director, as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, effective June 16, 2025,” the statement added.
The company expressed its gratitude to Dangote for his years of service and dedication, while welcoming Ekpe to his new role as the company looks forward to a new phase under his leadership.
