The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has strongly defended President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring stability.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Matawalle emphasised that the emergency rule was necessary to resolve the prolonged political crisis, which has obstructed governance and the welfare of the people.

He cited the demolition of the state House of Assembly by Governor Siminalayi Fubara as a major contributing factor, leaving the state without a functional legislature for over 14 months. The minister referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling reaffirming the constitutional necessity of a legislative arm, condemning the governor’s actions as unconstitutional.

Matawalle also expressed concern over rising reports of vandalism and militant threats, stressing the need for a collective effort to restore peace and security. He assured that the federal government remains committed to safeguarding citizens and critical infrastructure in Rivers State.

“In light of the current situation, the Nigerian military is on high alert to protect government infrastructure and ensure public safety,” the statement read. “Any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a firm response from security forces.”

The minister urged all stakeholders to embrace the opportunity for renewed governance and cooperation, expressing hope that the state of emergency would pave the way for lasting peace and democratic stability in Rivers State.
