Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has granted clemency to 11 inmates in a move to decongest correctional centres and promote rehabilitation.

According to Uche Anichukwu, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on External Relations, the pardon was based on proven reform and the ability of the inmates to reintegrate into society.

The decision, made under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the state Attorney General, Kingsley Udeh.

Beneficiaries include Ugochukwu Oma, Onah Nnamdi, Chiadikobi Onu, Emmanuel Sambo, Emeka Nyia, Ngene Oluebube, Francis Chinecherem, Eze Chigozie, Anthony Tombari, Francis Chibuzor, and Uzoma Nnaoche.

Justice sector stakeholders such as the Nigerian Correctional Service, CAPIO, and CIDJAP were also part of the review process.
