EU TO RESUME GAZA-EGYPT BORDER MONITORING MISSION WEDNESDAY

Written by on October 13, 2025

The European Union has announced plans to restart its civilian border monitoring mission at the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt on Wednesday, as part of efforts to support a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, confirmed the development in a post on X, stating that the bloc was ready to “do its part” in ensuring the implementation of the ceasefire.

“This mission can play an important role in supporting the ceasefire,” Kallas said after Hamas released the first group of Israeli hostages under the peace agreement.

The Rafah crossing is Gaza’s main gateway to Egypt and a crucial route for humanitarian aid. The EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) was originally established in 2005 to monitor the crossing but was suspended in 2007 after Hamas seized control of Gaza.

The mission, which includes police officers from Italy, Spain, and France, provides a neutral, third-party presence at the border. It was briefly redeployed in January 2025 before being suspended again in March.

Welcoming the latest breakthrough, Kallas praised U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in securing the ceasefire deal, calling it “a crucial milestone towards peace.”

In a separate statement, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described Monday’s Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh—which finalized the ceasefire agreement—as “a historical milestone.”

She said the EU “fully supports the peace plan brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkiye,” adding that the bloc stands ready to assist with governance reforms and institutional rebuilding within the Palestinian Authority.

The EU delegation at the summit is being led by European Council President Antonio Costa, who represents the member states of the 27-nation bloc.
