The Federal Government has urged the United States to reconsider its recent decision to tighten visa restrictions for Nigerian citizens, describing the policy as disproportionate and inconsistent with the longstanding cordial ties between both nations.

In a statement issued today by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government expressed concern over the revised US visa reciprocity schedule, which limits the validity of certain non-immigrant visas—including B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) categories—to just three months with a single-entry provision.

“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries,” the statement read.

Ebienfa noted that the decision appears misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral relations between friendly nations. He further stressed that the new policy could negatively affect a broad range of Nigerian citizens, including students pursuing education in the US, professionals involved in legitimate business activities, and families visiting loved ones.

The ministry warned that the visa limitations could hinder cultural, educational, and economic exchanges that have long been a cornerstone of US-Nigeria relations.

“While acknowledging the sovereign right of every country to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities,” the statement added.

Ebienfa confirmed that diplomatic engagements are currently ongoing and assured that the Nigerian government remains committed to reaching a resolution that reflects fairness and mutual interest.
