Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has urged the state’s contingent at the ongoing National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, to aim for record-breaking feats and outperform long-standing champions Delta State.
Governor Aiyedatiwa made this charge on Monday during a surprise visit to the athletes’ camp at Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State. He encouraged the team to improve on Ondo’s historic performance, noting that while the state had previously placed as high as fourth, its athletes must strive to climb even higher on the medals table.
“You must not go below our past record. At some point, Ondo State regularly finished between sixth and 13th positions. We have come fourth before, and we can do better,” Aiyedatiwa said. “Put in your best, and remember that with hard work and dedication, we can surpass expectations and put Ondo State in the spotlight of national sports.”
The governor, who described himself as a lover of sports, reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth and sports development, promising continuous support for athletes and grassroots sports initiatives.
“We are here to encourage you, to identify with you, and to let you know that we are behind you in every way. I am praying for you too — no harm shall come your way throughout this competition,” he stated.
Aiyedatiwa also highlighted the importance of the Games as a platform for talent discovery, urging the athletes to see the event not just as a competition but as a stepping stone to professional careers.
“Some of you may be discovered here and go on to achieve global recognition in your sporting careers. Take this opportunity seriously,” he added.
The athletes expressed appreciation for the governor’s visit, which they described as a morale booster. They assured him of their determination to win medals and make the state proud.
The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, which began on May 16, is being hosted in Ogun State and will run through May 30. Delta State, known for its dominance in the Games, remains the team to beat as states jostle for top honours in various sporting events
