The 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024, ended in Abeokuta with a blend of sporting brilliance, economic activity, and athlete protests.

Delta State dominated the medals table, securing 145 golds and cementing its reputation as Nigeria’s sports powerhouse. Bayelsa and hosts Ogun followed in second and third places, respectively. Ogun State achieved its best-ever finish, with standout performances in darts, athletics, football, and para-sports.

Notable records included Patience Okon-George’s new 400m mark and Dorcas Oka’s 33-year-old national swimming record-breaking feat. Darts champion Ololade Adeyemi emerged as one of the most decorated athletes of the event.

However, the festival was rocked by protests from Ogun and Kogi athletes over unpaid allowances. Ogun State officials assured payments had begun, calling the protests premature.

Despite the hiccups, the event was hailed for boosting local commerce and showcasing Nigeria’s athletic talent. Enugu State is set to host the next edition of the festival.
