Senator Gbenga Daniel has called for constitutional reform to limit immunity from prosecution to only the President and Vice President, saying governors have abused the privilege.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Political Paradigm, the Ogun East senator said many governors misuse the immunity clause in Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution, often treating state resources as personal property.
“Only the President and Vice President should enjoy absolute immunity to focus on governance without distractions,” he said.
Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State, proposed that governors be shielded only from criminal prosecution but still held accountable in other areas.
He also defended the 1999 Constitution, saying it was crafted by intelligent, patriotic minds and only requires updates based on Nigeria’s current realities.
