President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games is a “dream” that must become reality.
In a post on his official X handle on Wednesday, Tinubu stressed that no African nation has ever hosted the Games, saying Nigeria’s success would send a powerful message that Africa is central to the future of the Commonwealth.
“It’s time for Africa,” the President said, urging the Games’ governing body to “complete the circle of unity.”
Nigeria is set to present its final bid before the Commonwealth Games evaluation committee today. The Nigerian delegation is led by Shehu Dikko, President of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), and the Commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade.
The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) earlier confirmed it met the March 28, 2025, deadline for expression of interest. Abuja has been chosen as the host city for the proposed bid, with authorities describing it as a unique opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s growth, global standing, and sporting culture.
Nigeria previously lost its attempt to host the 2014 Games to Glasgow. The country last staged a major multi-sport event when it hosted the African Games in 2003.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will also be held in Glasgow after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to rising costs.
