Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have appealed to the Oyo State House of Assembly to reject the recent decision by Governor Seyi Makinde to rename the institution after a former governor of the state, the late Dr Omololu Olunloyo.

The governor made the announcement during a commendation service held in honour of Olunloyo at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, where he declared that the institution would now be known as Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan.

The announcement has since sparked widespread concern among students, alumni, and other stakeholders, who argue that the move could erode the institution’s legacy and identity.

In a letter submitted to the Oyo State House of Assembly on Monday, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the institution urged lawmakers to intervene and halt the proposed name change. The letter was jointly signed by the SUG President, Oladipupo Olamide, and General Secretary, Azeez Tolase.

“We, the Students’ Union Government of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, humbly appeal to your esteemed House to reconsider the matter of the governor’s recent pronouncement,” the letter read in part.

According to the union, the polytechnic has built a solid reputation over the past 50 years, and its current name is closely tied to its legacy of academic excellence. The students warned that renaming the school could disrupt its identity and negatively impact current students, alumni, and the wider community.

“The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has a rich legacy spanning over five decades, and its name is synonymous with excellence in education. Renaming it would erase its identity and legacy,” the letter stated.

The students also highlighted the importance of preserving the institution’s history, protecting its brand identity, and maintaining alumni relations. They warned that the change could have far-reaching consequences on the public image and national recognition of the institution.

“We appeal that our institution’s name should be retained as The Polytechnic, Ibadan,” the union pleaded.

The Oyo State House of Assembly is expected to deliberate on the matter in the coming days.
