The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday met with retired police officers who staged a protest in Abuja over poor welfare conditions and their continued inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The meeting was held at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, following a demonstration earlier in the day at the National Assembly.

The protesters, mostly elderly ex-personnel, defied the rain as they carried placards and chanted protest songs, demanding the removal of police officers from the CPS. Some of them later proceeded to the Force Headquarters to press home their demands.

While addressing the aggrieved officers, the IGP acknowledged their concerns, noting that efforts were ongoing to improve the welfare of retired personnel. However, he clarified that the police’s exit from the CPS was not a decision that could be implemented immediately.

Egbetokun also urged the protest leaders to avoid spreading misinformation, stressing that the police force would not abandon its retirees.

Earlier in the day, the IGP had directed all Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure adequate security during the planned protest.
