INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has called on African youths to take an active role in promoting peaceful and credible elections across the continent.
Speaking at a public lecture at the Civil Service University in The Gambia on Tuesday, Yakubu addressed students of International Affairs, Diplomacy, and Peace and Conflict Studies. His lecture, titled “Democracy and Peaceful Elections in West Africa”, emphasised youth participation as vital to sustaining democratic values.
“Young people form the backbone of election duty staff,” he said, noting their crucial involvement in voter registration and election day operations.
Yakubu encouraged youths to maintain integrity, obey electoral laws, and act patriotically. “If you want peaceful elections, play your part for God and country. Do the right thing,” he urged.
He also cautioned against misinformation, especially by political party agents and online users. “Don’t be among the fake news merchants. If it’s not verified, don’t share it,” he warned, stressing the dangers of disinformation in the digital age.
Yakubu concluded by urging African youths to remain committed to democratic ideals. “Democracy must be nurtured and protected, especially by the younger generation,” he said.
In recognition of his contribution, Yakubu was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the university’s Deputy Director General, Mrs Fatou Barry.
