The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently holding a crucial meeting to deliberate on a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in the National Assembly.
INEC’s Acting Director of Publicity, Esther Chibuikem, confirmed that the meeting is taking place at a committee room within the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. This follows the official receipt of the petition by INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, on Monday.
Last Friday, the Federal High Court in Lokoja overturned an earlier ruling that had restrained INEC from receiving the recall petition initiated by constituents of Kogi Central. In its landmark judgment, the court affirmed that the recall process is constitutionally valid and upholds the civic rights of the constituents.
The court further urged the petitioners to continue exercising their democratic rights in an orderly and peaceful manner. This development came after an interim injunction was granted on Thursday, temporarily preventing INEC and its representatives from receiving or acting on the recall petition.
The ongoing INEC meeting is expected to determine the next steps in the recall process, following the court’s latest ruling.
