The Labour Party (LP) National Executive Committee (NEC) has elected Senator Usman Nenadi as the Interim National Chairman of the party. Senator Darlington Nwokocha was also named Interim National Secretary. The appointments were made during the statutory NEC meeting held on Friday in Abuja.

The newly constituted interim working committee is to steer the party’s affairs until a national convention is held to elect a new executive council. The NEC also approved a schedule for the conduct of congresses at all levels—ward, local government, state, zonal, and national.

The party’s National Secretariat has been mandated to release guidelines and timelines for these congresses, aimed at ensuring a transparent and democratic process.

Present at the meeting were key stakeholders, including the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, the LP’s only serving governor.

In his remarks, Comrade Ajaero reaffirmed the party’s grassroots identity and criticised those he described as impostors.

jaero said he encouraged members not to be “Anyone who is not working with the labour force but claims to be the party’s chairman is a daydreamer.” A discouraged by internal disputes and stressed the importance of remaining focused on restructuring and rebranding the party.

Governor Otti also addressed the gathering, stating that the NEC meeting followed the Supreme Court’s judgement affirming Senator Nenadi’s position as the party’s lawful leader.

“As law-abiding citizens, we are here to initiate a structured rebuilding process, starting with the appointment of an interim national working committee to oversee all party affairs until the convention,” Otti said.

He advised the faction led by Julius Abure to respect the court ruling and align with the party’s renewed efforts.

Otti also commended the NLC for its role in founding the Labour Party but noted that the party has since evolved.

“The party is now bigger than the NLC. We must put aside our differences and work together in unity for the good of the Labour Party,” he added.

The meeting marked a turning point in the party’s ongoing leadership crisis and laid the groundwork for its internal restructuring and reconciliation process.
