Thirty-seven out of the 40 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have reaffirmed their confidence in Speaker Mojisola Meranda by passing a vote of confidence in her leadership.
The resolution came amid growing speculation about Meranda’s potential resignation. The motion to endorse her leadership was moved by Oladipo Ajomale, representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2.
Ajomale emphasized that Meranda’s election as Speaker was conducted in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution and other relevant laws. “We elected you as Speaker because we believe in you,” he declared.
Following the vote, the House adjourned plenary indefinitely. However, the leadership crisis deepened as heavily armed operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the Assembly complex.
Despite the heightened tension, Meranda presided over the session, asserting her authority as Speaker. In a show of solidarity, hundreds of staff members rallied behind her, singing support songs and affirming their approval of the lawmakers’ decision to elect her as Speaker.
