LAGOS DOCTORS BEGIN THREE-DAY WARNING STRIKE OVER UNILATERAL SALARY DEDUCTIONS, THREATEN INDEFINITE ACTION

Written by on July 28, 2025

Doctors under the employment of the Lagos State Government have commenced a three-day warning strike to protest unilateral salary deductions implemented by the state treasury office.

The strike, declared by the Medical Guild—the umbrella body for medical and dental practitioners employed by the state—began on Monday, July 28, 2025, and is scheduled to run until 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 31.

In a statement jointly signed by the Guild’s Chairman, Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, and Secretary, Dr. Adekunle Akinade, the association expressed deep disappointment over the pay cut, which it described as unjust, illegal, and a violation of labour agreements.

The doctors condemned the state government for effecting salary reductions without prior notice or consultation, especially at a time when the nation is facing severe economic challenges.

“This singular act and repeated provocation by the government is highly regrettable, illegal, a breach of trust and cordial agreement, and totally frowned upon by the labour law,” the Guild stated.

It noted that although earlier engagements with the state government had led to a temporary resolution—including the reversal of the salary cut and the formation of a joint conciliation committee—the treasury office went ahead to reduce doctors’ salaries again in July.

The Guild also lamented that the most senior doctor in Lagos State’s employment earns less than $1,100 monthly, questioning the logic behind the decision to reduce already modest earnings.

“At a time when other states are taking proactive steps to retain and motivate their health workforce amid the economic hardship and the brain drain caused by the ‘Japa’ syndrome, it is unfortunate that Lagos is taking this path,” the Guild said.

Following an emergency general assembly held on July 26, which was attended by over 385 doctors, the Guild resolved to:

  1. Embark on a total withdrawal of service from Monday, July 28, at 8:00 a.m. to Thursday, July 31, at 8:00 a.m.
  2. Issue a 21-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government, after which an indefinite strike will commence if their demands are not met.

The doctors are demanding the immediate reversal of the salary deductions and the payment of 12 months’ revised CONMESS arrears owed to honorary consultants at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

They have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently intervene and prevent a total breakdown of services in the state’s health sector.

“We appreciate all our resilient congressmen and women for the sacrifices they have made so far. We urge the governor to act swiftly to restore peace and normalcy,” the Guild said.
