LAGOS FASHION WEEK MAKES HISTORY WITH EARTHSHOT PRIZE WIN
Written by Oluwaseyi Amosun on November 7, 2025

Lagos Fashion Week has etched its name in history by winning the 2025 Earthshot Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious environmental awards. The recognition celebrates the platform’s decade-long commitment to promoting sustainability, ethical practices, and community-driven innovation within Africa’s fashion industry.
Founded by Omoyemi Akerele in 2011, Lagos Fashion Week began as a showcase for emerging African designers but has since evolved into a transformative movement redefining how fashion is created, consumed, and valued. Over the years, it has united designers, artisans, and policymakers who share a common belief — that fashion can be both stylish and sustainable.
The award comes at a time when the global fashion industry faces mounting criticism for its waste problem. Consumers are buying more clothing and keeping them for shorter periods, leading to excessive textile waste. However, Lagos Fashion Week has consistently taken a different approach, ensuring that every designer featured on its runway demonstrates a commitment to sustainability — from responsible fabric sourcing and eco-friendly dyeing methods to fair labour and ethical production practices.
A key part of this mission is the Woven Threads Initiative, a programme that equips designers with practical tools and knowledge to build circular fashion systems. Through this, creators learn to transform waste into wearable art, merging innovation with environmental responsibility.
The Earthshot Prize, established by Prince William in 2020, honours individuals and organisations pioneering groundbreaking solutions to repair the planet. Lagos Fashion Week’s win in the “Build a Waste-Free World” category marks a significant milestone — placing Nigeria and Africa among the world’s top innovators using creativity to combat climate change.
In her reaction, Akerele described the award as a collective victory for the continent’s creative ecosystem.
“The recognition from The Earthshot Prize is not just about me or Lagos Fashion Week, but about the community of designers, artisans, and young people proving that African fashion has something powerful and lasting to offer the world,” she said.
For years, Africa has often been portrayed as a victim of climate change. Lagos Fashion Week is rewriting that narrative, proving that the continent is not merely part of the solution but is actively leading it. Through sustainability workshops, mentorship programmes, and collaborations with local craft communities, the platform continues to build an ecosystem that values cultural heritage, reduces waste, and empowers the next generation of African designers.
With this historic win, Lagos Fashion Week not only cements its place in global fashion history but also sets a powerful example of how creativity, responsibility, and innovation can work together to shape a more sustainable future.
