The Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Oyegbemi, has dethroned six traditional chiefs for attending the campaign flag-off of the Labour Party without prior approval.
The chiefs were accused of violating palace protocol by attending the political rally in the Apapa area of Lagos State and allegedly impersonating the monarch during the event.
Those affected include Chief Lateef Ojora (Bale Alaba Oro), Chief Saliu Biliamin (Bale Alafia Dodoro), Chief Taiwo Hassan (Bale Oke Ira), Chief Idris Ojora (Bale Abule Kere), Chief Hakeem Oseni (Bale Mosafejo Amukoko), and Chief Sule Balogun (Balogun of Abule Kere).
In a statement issued by the palace and obtained on Tuesday, Oba Oyegbemi described the actions of the chiefs as “unacceptable” and a breach of the traditional hierarchy.
“Following the outcome of this event, which unfolded without his prior knowledge, Kabiyesi Ojora summoned the Bales, Balogun, and the Ojora Councils to his ancient palace for clarification,” the statement read.
The monarch, expressing disappointment during a meeting held on Monday, stated that no chief is allowed to act or speak on his behalf without his explicit permission, stressing that all palace chiefs are custodians of tradition and represent his authority in public matters.
“The decisive action of dethroning the six chiefs underscores his commitment to maintaining order and coherence within his leadership structure,” the statement added.
While addressing the matter, Oba Oyegbemi also commended the current administration’s developmental efforts in Ojora land and pledged his continued support for the government’s growth initiatives.
The monarch further emphasised the importance of transparency and cooperation between traditional rulers and their representatives in political affairs, warning all serving chiefs to strictly adhere to palace protocols going forward.
