The Lagos State Government has rolled out a new environmental campaign titled “Trash for Cash”, encouraging residents to earn money by exchanging recyclable waste materials for cash.

The initiative, announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on his official X handle on Monday, is part of the state’s broader effort to promote cleaner, greener, and more sustainable communities.

“Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our @Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen!” Wahab wrote.
He added that residents who participate in the programme will be rewarded every Thursday for contributing to the cleanliness of the city.
“It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city! Get involved and see the value in your waste,” he said.

According to Wahab, the initiative is being spearheaded by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), which has begun sensitisation campaigns across various communities. The campaigns aim to educate residents on waste sorting, recycling, and how to profit from recyclable materials.

LAWMA, in a statement via its official X handle, confirmed that field officers and recycling partners have started engaging residents across the state to promote responsible waste management practices.
“Residents and shop owners in Agege (Sango Ward) were sensitised on proper waste management and prompt bill payments. Keeping Lagos clean starts with each of us — proper disposal, sorting, and zero roadside dumping,” the agency said.

The government explained that the programme aligns with its waste-to-wealth agenda, which seeks to reduce environmental pollution, encourage recycling, and empower residents economically.

Officials say the “Trash for Cash” initiative will not only reduce waste accumulation but also create income opportunities for Lagosians while supporting the state’s long-term goal of becoming Africa’s cleanest and most sustainable megacity.
