The wave of defections from Nigeria’s opposition parties appears far from over, as more governors are reportedly preparing to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule.

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television on Thursday, Governor Sule hinted that several governors are already in talks to defect, following in the footsteps of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who recently joined the APC along with his cabinet members and predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

“We are expecting more governors to join the APC. I don’t know the exact number, but a lot of them have shown interest,” Sule said, expressing optimism over the growing appeal of the APC under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

According to him, President Tinubu’s reform agenda and leadership style have made the party attractive to politicians across party lines. “When we meet with the president, there’s a lot of excitement among the governors. They feel accepted, and they like him,” he added.

Oborevwori’s defection on Wednesday marked a major political shift in Delta State. His move came shortly after he publicly endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in 2027, despite still being a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the time. His colleague in Akwa Ibom, Governor Umo Eno, had also previously declared support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, explained that the defection was driven by a desire to collaborate more effectively for the development of the state, describing the switch as necessary to “build a Delta that every citizen will be proud of.”

The trend is expected to continue as the APC strengthens its base ahead of the 2027 general elections.
