Nigeria will not be drawn into the internal affairs of China, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on China-Nigeria Parliamentary Relations, Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, has said.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Yakubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s firm commitment to the One-China Policy, which recognises Taiwan as an integral part of the People’s Republic of China.
He emphasised that this longstanding diplomatic stance remains the foundation of the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and China.
“The One-China Policy remains the cornerstone of China-Nigeria relations,” Yakubu said. “Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1971, Nigeria has consistently upheld this principle.”
His comments came in response to recent remarks by Andy Yih-Ping Liu, Head of Taiwan’s Trade Mission in Nigeria, who had claimed that Taiwan is not part of China.
Yakubu, however, referenced United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, which recognises the People’s Republic of China as “the sole legitimate representative of the whole of China, including Taiwan.”
He described efforts by Taiwan’s trade office to undermine Nigeria’s diplomatic alignment with Beijing as “futile,” stressing that Nigeria’s position remains unchanged.
“Any attempt to distort this internationally recognised policy will not succeed,” Yakubu said, reaffirming the country’s respect for China’s sovereignty and commitment to non-interference in its domestic affairs.
Finally, he also noted that “Nigeria’s relationship with China is built on mutual respect and non-interference in each other’s political matters.”
