Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, will take on a formidable Italian side in the round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco today, with a spot in the quarter-finals at stake, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The clash will take place at Pitch 2 of the Football Academy Mohamed VI in Rabat and promises to be one of the most intriguing fixtures of the knockout stage. This will be the first-ever meeting between Nigeria and Italy at this level.
Italy have been among the tournament’s standout teams, topping Group A with three straight wins: a thrilling 4–3 victory over Brazil, a 3–1 triumph against hosts Morocco, and a 3–0 win over Costa Rica. Led by in-form striker Giulia Galli, the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, the Italians have combined attacking flair with defensive discipline, making them favourites heading into the tie.
Nigeria advanced as one of the best third-placed teams after a shaky start in Group D. The Flamingos fell 4–1 to Canada and 1–0 to France before bouncing back with a 4–0 victory over Samoa in their final group match. Winger Tabitha Terlumun starred, assisting Queen Joseph’s second goal and winning a penalty early in the second half. Her pace, creativity, and energy on the right flank were pivotal to Nigeria’s resurgence.
Reflecting on the early setbacks, Terlumun said the defeats were tough but offered valuable lessons. “Our match against Canada was unfortunate because we played well in the first half, but lost momentum in the second. It was unbelievable because we never imagined losing that game,” she admitted.
Looking ahead to Italy, Terlumun remains optimistic. “If we bring together the mindset we used against France and Samoa, we can make it past the quarter-finals. Anything can happen in a knockout stage. If we stay united, play with confidence, and give everything, we have what it takes to go all the way.”
Coach Bankole Olowookere is expected to retain the core side that excelled against Samoa, combining attacking sharpness with defensive solidity. Kick-off is set for 8 pm Nigeria time, with the winner advancing to face the victor of Paraguay vs. Mexico in a high-stakes quarter-final showdown.
