Nigeria’s hopes of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a major setback following the injury of first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. The 29-year-old, who plies his trade with South African club Chippa United, was stretchered off in visible discomfort during the first half of Tuesday’s league clash against Richards Bay. The nature and severity of the injury remain uncertain, as Chippa United’s medical team continues to monitor his condition.
The timing of the injury has raised serious concerns within the Super Eagles camp, with crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa just weeks away. Nwabali, who has earned 21 caps for Nigeria, has been a dependable figure in coach Eric Chelle’s setup, especially following his standout performances at the last Africa Cup of Nations. His absence could prove costly, as Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C with seven points—six adrift of leaders South Africa.
Compounding the crisis is the unavailability of Maduka Okoye, who is serving a two-month suspension over illegal betting activities. This leaves the national team with limited and largely untested options. Amas Obasogie, based in Tanzania, has never featured for the Super Eagles. Adebayo Adeleye, currently with Greek outfit Volos NPS, has only one international appearance to his name. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Ebenezer Harcourt, who impressed at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, has received a first-time senior call-up but is not expected to start in such high-pressure encounters.
With Nigeria set to host Rwanda in Uyo on September 6 before travelling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa on September 9, the absence of Nwabali could significantly impact the team’s chances of closing the gap at the top of the table. Only the group winner secures automatic qualification, making every point critical. As the Super Eagles scramble for solutions, all eyes will be on Coach Chelle’s next move in navigating this goalkeeping dilemma.
