The Ogun State Government has announced the commencement of retail Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refilling operations in Abeokuta, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and affordable transportation under the Federal Government’s Presidential Initiative on CNG (PiCNG).

Commissioner for Transportation, Olugbenga Dairo, confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, highlighting the operational launch of the NNPC CNG Station located in Kuto, Abeokuta. The station, which began operations two months ago, has now been approved for retail services.

Before the approval, motorists in the state capital had to travel to Mowe-Ibafo to access retail CNG refilling, due to the absence of such infrastructure within Abeokuta. The Kuto facility was specifically designed to cater to retail consumers, especially vehicle owners who have undergone conversion under the PiCNG scheme.

Dairo said the new retail station forms part of the state’s broader strategy to promote cleaner energy alternatives in transportation, aligning with national efforts to transition away from traditional fossil fuels.

He further listed other approved CNG stations across the state and their refilling capacities, noting that the expansion of CNG infrastructure underscores Ogun’s proactive approach to environmental sustainability and economic development.

“The government’s investment in CNG infrastructure is a deliberate move toward fostering a cleaner, safer, and more cost-effective transport system,” he stated. “This initiative not only supports environmental goals but also delivers long-term economic benefits for both residents and businesses in Ogun State.”

The development is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs, cut carbon emissions, and stimulate further private sector participation in Nigeria’s emerging clean energy economy.
