The Oniroyin Support Initiative (OSI), a non-governmental organization focused on supporting the families of deceased journalists in Ogun State, held its inaugural empowerment program today in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The event saw the presentation of cheques to families of late journalists, offering financial relief to those who have lost their loved ones in the profession.

A notable addition to the event was a Free Medical Outreach aimed at journalists, addressing their health concerns and providing vital medical services.

Chairman of OSI, Comrade Olufunke Fadugba, emphasized the emotional and psychological toll the journalism profession often takes on its practitioners.

Nobody speaks for us when we are in trouble, but when something happens to others, we are there to voice it out.” She said as she urged journalists to be more mindful of their health and well-being, underscoring that covering events could affect their mental and physical health in ways that are often overlooked.

The convener of the event, Hon. Tunde Oladunjoye, who is also a journalist himself, expressed pride in his profession but urged fellow journalists to prioritize their own health. He revealed that the establishment of the Oniroyin Support Initiative was born out of a desire to help ease the burdens faced by families of late journalists.

Accordingly, Oladunjoye who also doubles as he Consultant to the Ogun State Governor on Media and Communications, pledged ongoing support for both the deceased’s families and active journalists in Ogun State.

The Chairman of the Occasion lauded the efforts of the OSI and pledged the full support of his own foundation, which also provides assistance to widows of journalists. He expressed his intent to partner with OSI to further alleviate the challenges faced by the widows.

In a heartfelt moment, Mrs. Moradeyo Olaranwaju, a widow and one of the beneficiaries of the initiative, thanked OSI and its board of trustees for their invaluable support. She was joined by fellow beneficiary Mr. Sokumbi Taofeek Eniola, both of whom prayed for the continued growth and success of OSI.

The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including Mrs. Bola Obasanjo, the wife of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
