Tensions have escalated in Osun State as communal clashes between the Ifon and Ilobu communities spread to Erin Osun, prompting Governor Ademola Adeleke to impose a 24-hour curfew in the affected areas.
Initially, a 12-hour curfew was declared to curb the violence, but the situation deteriorated, leading to further security measures. The clashes have displaced many residents, with several seen leaving the area, particularly in Okinni.
In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke reaffirmed his commitment to restoring peace. He announced the deployment of a joint security task force and ongoing peace negotiations between the warring communities.
“We assure the people of Ilobu and Ifon that their safety remains our priority. The presidency has been briefed, and we are actively managing the situation,” the statement read.
Additionally, the government warned against the circulation of old videos portraying previous conflicts in Osun, labelling them as misinformation aimed at undermining the state’s security efforts.
Residents have been urged to comply with the curfew while authorities work to restore peace and prevent further violence.
