Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke.
Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has ordered the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, to summon the general managers of broadcasting stations across the state for a formal briefing over alleged violations of the National Broadcasting Code.
This directive follows recent political developments in the state, including reactions to last Friday’s Court of Appeal ruling involving the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen’s suit seeking to relist a previously dismissed appeal.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke expressed strong displeasure with certain radio stations for allegedly allowing opposition guests, particularly members of the APC, to incite public unrest during live programmes. He also criticised what he described as the lack of a fair hearing given to those being accused on air.
“The governor expressed displeasure at the activities of some radio stations who allowed guests to incite the public to violence and also manifest disdain for lack of fair hearing to affected stakeholders,” the statement read.
Adeleke directed that a meeting be held with the heads of the affected stations, warning that sanctions may follow if violations persist.
While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to press freedom, the governor stressed the importance of professionalism and strict adherence to broadcasting codes.
He added that responsible journalism remains critical to public stability, warning that his government would not hesitate to act against any broadcaster found flouting the rules.
