The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has confirmed he will run for president again in 2027.
Obi made the announcement on Sunday during a live session on X Spaces, where he answered questions from Nigerians at home and abroad. He said he would serve only one term if elected.
“I will bring stability in Nigeria within two years in office,” Obi said. “I am willing to serve a single four-year term to set the country on the right path.”
Obi ruled out any alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, but said he remained open to a coalition focused on solving Nigeria’s problems.
“If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue, Zamfara, reviving the economy, and feeding Nigerians, count me out,” he said. “Nigeria is at war. We must act urgently.”
In a statement on Monday, his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, reaffirmed Obi’s stance, adding that the 2027 campaign would be non-violent and transparent.
“We will do things differently in 2027. We will insist on transparency before any result is announced. Our votes will count,” Obi said.
Obi also listed his top priorities: security, education, and poverty reduction. He promised to cut the cost of governance and fight corruption from day one.
“My family will not be involved in corruption. Government funds will go into critical sectors,” he said.
On the crisis within the Labour Party, Obi said talks were ongoing to get the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise the Nenadi Usman-led faction in line with a Supreme Court ruling.
He also supported rotating power between North and South. “I believe in government rotation. I implemented it in Anambra,” he added.
Obi criticised President Bola Tinubu for spending time abroad while insecurity worsens at home. “People are dying in Benue and Borno, and our leaders are commissioning bus stops and holidaying. That is not leadership,” he said.
He pledged to end party-switching among elected officials and promote integrity in politics.
“There will be no defection under my watch. Anyone who wants to serve should be ready to lay down their life for Nigerians,” Obi said.
