The Ministry of Petroleum Resources has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a foundational figure in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry whose contributions continue to shape the sector.
In a condolence message issued in Abuja on Monday, the Ministry expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s death, which occurred on Sunday at a clinic in London. The message, signed by Christopher Ugwuegbulam, Head of Press and Public Relations, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, highlighted Buhari’s long-standing connection with the petroleum sector spanning nearly five decades.
Buhari served as Federal Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources from 1976 to 1978 under the administration of then-Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo. He was also the first Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), now NNPC Limited.
According to the Ministry, Buhari’s tenure in the oil sector was marked by a strong commitment to clean and accountable governance. The statement said his leadership helped establish key infrastructure and institutions that paved the way for current reforms in the industry.
As President from 2015 to 2023, Buhari once again held the petroleum portfolio and led reforms that culminated in the signing of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), a major legislation aimed at boosting transparency and efficiency in the oil and gas sector.
“From foundational infrastructure to bold sectoral reforms, President Buhari’s legacy in the oil and gas sector is far-reaching,” the statement read.
The Ministry offered its condolences to Buhari’s family, the Nigerian government, and the public, praying for divine comfort and eternal rest for the former president.
