The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, is holding a closed-door meeting with service chiefs and heads of security and intelligence agencies in Abuja.
The specific agenda of the meeting has not been disclosed. However, it comes amid reports that US President Donald Trump allegedly directed preparations for possible military action in Nigeria over claims of a genocide against Christians.
Earlier reports from Eagle 102.5 FM stated that Trump threatened to deploy military forces if the Nigerian government did not stop the alleged killings. In a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump instructed the “Department of War” to prepare for “possible action” should the violence continue. He also warned that the United States would halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria if President Bola Tinubu’s administration failed to address the alleged persecution.
Trump’s post read in part:
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now-disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities. I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians.”
Following the meeting, Ribadu is expected to brief newspaper editors and top media executives.
The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu, confirmed that the NSA and security chiefs would provide a media briefing to address the alleged genocide and update the public on ongoing government efforts to tackle insecurity and related challenges.
