The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, pledging full support for the newly appointed sole administrator.

In a statement on Tuesday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule acknowledged the Assembly’s acceptance of the decision, despite initial hopes for a different resolution. “We assure our constituents that we will abide by this declaration, even though it is not what we prayed for. Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country,” he said.

Amaewhule blamed Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the state’s political crisis, citing his disregard for court rulings and obstruction of legislative processes. He urged residents to remain calm as the sole administrator assumes office, assuring that the Assembly would provide full support to restore stability.

On Tuesday, Tinubu suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state assembly for six months, citing the need to resolve ongoing political turmoil. He appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibokette Ibas, as Rivers State’s administrator to oversee governance during the emergency period. {Punch}
