The Senate has approved the setup of an ad hoccommittee to organise a two-day National Security Summit in Abuja.

The summit is aimed at addressing the nation’s escalating insecurity and will involve key players from the federal, state, and local governments, as well as traditional leaders and security stakeholders.

During Tuesday’s plenary, senators debated the usefulness of another summit, with some expressing doubts due to the limited impact of previous gatherings. Others, however, argued that fresh, inclusive dialogue could offer innovative solutions and strengthen Nigeria’s security framework.

Proponents stressed the need for a coordinated approach that would help refine military strategies and integrate community-based security models.

Despite differing opinions, the motion was adopted. Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the committee to begin preparations without delay.

The planned summit will include representatives from the 36 states, local councils, and traditional institutions. It is expected to focus on intelligence sharing, emerging security threats, and the creation of a national security roadmap to support future policy and legislative action.
